In case you are new to the blog, or came in part way through the series, Let me recap what I’m doing. In just about 5 years, I have come to thoroughly love the art of storytelling. But there is a lot that I still don’t know about it. With that understanding, I’m on a journey to understand the different types of oral stories I keep hearing about. I hear about many, but I don’t fully understand what makes them different.  So I have been reading and watching videos and talking to storytellers from all over. So far, here are the oral storytelling times I wrote about: 

  1. Folktales
  2. Myths
  3. Fairytales
  4. Fables
  5. Folklore
  6. Personal narrative stories

The rest of the oral storytelling times that I plan to cover are:

  1. Historical Tales
  2. Literary stories
  3. Biographical stories
  4. Biblical stories
  5. Horror/ghost stories
  6. Legends
  7. Tall tales
  8. Nakali (Iranian)
  9. African oral traditions
  10. Sigana Storytelling performance (which may fall under African oral traditions)

As you can see, there are a lot to still cover. And I am excited about that! There are some many great things to share about the art storytelling, and I look forward to sharing what I find. After years of being an instructor in the military and the and the fire service, I realized I needed to improve my delivery. My students needed me to improve delivery. But how do I improve my delivery? Simple. I finally took a member of Toastmasters up on the invitation to come to a meeting. It wasn't long until I joined. Along the way of improving my skills at delivering a message, I came to understand that of all the ways to get a point across, telling stories is the best way to get it done. Around this time, another friend from Toastmasters told me about The Moth monthly story telling shows. What better way to test out my theories on storytelling. It's in my travels there to the shows that I found more and more shows, and classes, and events centered around storytelling. Despite how many people know about the storytelling world, not many people know about the storytelling world. So now, I'm out to tell the world about storytelling.
