So I’m talking with 3 friends about what it takes to have your own day. You know that’s a thing right? For example, did you know that 31 May is National Smile Day? National Macaroon Day? National Speak in Complete Sentences day? Sounds crazy right? Turns out that getting a special day can be done with enough money and filling out an application. For some people.

Most Americans wouldn’t know about those special days with out looking them up. Hopefully, they do realize the 4th day of May is Memorial Day. Most will know it as the unofficial beginning of summer, discounts, and grilling. Yes, it is all of those things. It is also the day we remember the military people who have their lives in conflicts over the years. Some of the conflicts were highly supported, some often debated. Still, they served.

This one day can exist as many, but the cost to get recognized for the day is not the same. “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” (George Santayana-1905) If we remember the stories of the people that gave their lives in military conflicts, perhaps we can remember why Memorial Day is given the the 4th Monday of every May. Do enjoy the day off. Enjoy grilling. Be sure to speak in complete sentences. And remember the ultimate cost of Memorial Day.

After years of being an instructor in the military and the and the fire service, I realized I needed to improve my delivery. My students needed me to improve delivery. But how do I improve my delivery? Simple. I finally took a member of Toastmasters up on the invitation to come to a meeting. It wasn't long until I joined. Along the way of improving my skills at delivering a message, I came to understand that of all the ways to get a point across, telling stories is the best way to get it done. Around this time, another friend from Toastmasters told me about The Moth monthly story telling shows. What better way to test out my theories on storytelling. It's in my travels there to the shows that I found more and more shows, and classes, and events centered around storytelling. Despite how many people know about the storytelling world, not many people know about the storytelling world. So now, I'm out to tell the world about storytelling.
